The botanical name is derived from the Latin sapo (soap) and (Indian) indicus, referring to the lather-producing fruit. They are harvested from a tree (interestingly, much like the olive). There are two primary species (mukorossi and trifoliatus). Both are of the family Sapindaceae and the genus Sapindus. Mukorossi is a large tree primarily grown in and around the Himalayan Mountains of Northern India and Nepal. Application Warm or Hot Water Wash:
- Simply tie bag shut and toss in washing machine. (Soap nuts will last longer using warm vs. hot water.)
- Remove from washer to dry at end of the wash.
- Re-use approximately 5 times. Nuts are no longer effective when they turn soft and gray.

Cold Water Wash:
- Soak sampler bags in about a cup of very hot water for approximately 3 minutes.
- Pour water and bag in wash.

Tip - Put approximately 1/2 ounce or the equivalent of 4-5 soap nuts in the wash bag. tighten drawstrings to secure. Soft water may require less soap nuts. Very hard water may require more.
- There is no need for fabric softener. Soap nuts leave your cloths soft and fresh smelling.
- Soap nuts will not remove heavy stains, as with any detergent, pre-treat stains with a stain remover as usual.
- Soap nuts are most effective in loads that are less than totally packed full.
- If you like super whites, you can add baking soda, sea salt, borax or oxygen bleach to the load.
- Laundry will simply smell fresh and clean. If you prefer a scent, you can add 10 drops of essential oil on the cotton bag or put the essential oil on a clean rag and toss in dryer.
- NOTE: Avoid Tea Tree oil exposure with infants and for diaper washing.
- There will be very little sudsing. No suds actually means no commercial foaming agents or chemicals.
- Soap nuts are wonderful for washing cloth diapers. Unlike chemical detergents, they will not clog the fabric causing the diaper to loose its absorbency. They will not cause diaper rash. In addition, soap nuts will clean and remove detergent residue.
